How to Make an Acorn and Oak Leaf Garland

There's such a special charm in a strand of little woodland pieces, soft greens and browns strung together for a living room mantle or a child’s bedroom. This garland is quick to make, easy to customize, and a lovely way to use the acorns and oak leaves from my crochet pattern set. I also have a step by step video tutorial on YouTube, and I will place the link below so you can follow along as you stitch.

What you will need

You will need the Acorns and Oak Leaves crochet pattern set, worsted or aran weight yarns in autumnal colors, a 3.5 mm crochet hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors.

Before you start

Crochet your motifs first. Make at least 6 acorns and 6 leaves. For a fuller garland, plan on 8 to 12 of each. Mix small and big leaves, and wide and long acorns, for a natural look.

  1. Make the hanging cord
With your 3.5 mm hook and matching yarn, chain 10 to 15 sts. This creates a tail you can use to hang the garland.

  2. Attach the first set
Single Crochet into the top of one acorn to anchor it to the chain.

    • pass the hook through the loop at the top of the acorn sem, repeat a second time with the second lop at the top of the stem

    • Single Crochet through  one of the loops or the top of the leaf stem, repeat with the other loop at the top of the stem, Chain 10.

  3. Continue the spacing
Chain 10 for the gap between sets, more or less depending on how dense you want the garland to look.

  4. Repeat the set
Add one acorn and one leaf as in Step 2. Chain 10 for the gap. Repeat until you have used all of your motifs.

  5. Finish the cord
After the last leaf, chain 10 to 15 for the hanging tail, turn.

  6. Slip Stitch back across the top to beginning to give the garland a sturdy cord and fully secure the leaves and acorns.

  7. Fasten off. With a tapestry needle weave in the ends neatly.

  8. Tidy and shape
Lay the garland flat. Nudge acorns and leaves so they face forward. Optionally, lightly steam block the leaves so the lobes relax and lay more flat.

  9. Hang and enjoy
Tie or loop the cord tails around small nails, hooks, or a mantle clip. Let the strands drape naturally.

Tips and variations

  • Length guide: for a 14 inch garland, plan 5 to 6 sets with a chain gap of 10 stitches between each.

  • Color play: use different shades of green for leaves and different browns for acorns to give depth and contrast.

  • Alternative cord: Make a quick i-cord, then attach acorns and leaves after, if you prefer a rounded cord.

  • Mix the set: alternate acorn-only and leaf-only repeats, or add the Mushrooms pattern pieces for a woodland mix.
